Guangdong is experiencing extreme weather contrasts, with record-breaking heat gripping parts of the province while severe thunderstorms threaten its northern areas.

On April 8, eight weather stations across Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan broke local high-temperature records for early April, with temperatures hitting 41.3°C in Yuanyang County, Yunnan, and Chengmai County, Hainan, the highest temperatures recorded nationwide so far this year.

The extreme heat is driven by a strong, band-shaped subtropical high-pressure system that dominates the Indochina Peninsula and the South China Sea. Stronger and more stable than usual, it is bringing clear skies and intense solar radiation to the region.

Forecasters say the heatwave will persist for at least another week, with the scorching conditions expanding across most of southern China.

Severe weather threatens Guangdong

While much of the province is sweltering, the province's northern regions face a different threat. Guangdong has entered its peak season for severe convection weather, and authorities are warning of significant risks.

Guangdong's weather forecast for April 12–15 indicates that northern cities, including Shaoguan, Qingyuan and northern Zhaoqing, will see scattered showers and thunderstorms, while the Leizhou Peninsula will remain sunny with highs above 35°C. Daytime highs in most other areas will range from 28°C to 34°C.

Typhoon Sinlaku, the fourth named storm of the year, formed in the western Pacific and intensified into a severe typhoon on April 12. It is expected to strengthen further, yet poses no threat to China's coastal areas.
