159 street dance lovers from Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) gathered in Yongqing Fang. Guangzhou's Liwan District for a street dance exchange competition with the theme of intangible cultural heritage on August 19.
According to the authority of Liwan District, competitors draw an intangible cultural heritage theme, including lion dance, Cantonese Opera, Kungfu, Cantonese embroidery, and dragon boat before the dance battle. Then, competitors started a freestyle battle with one of the themes, showing the charm of Cantonese intangible cultural heritage through their dance. Twelve street dancers entered the final matches and competed at the Cantonese Opera Art Museum at night, and six dancers won the championship and the second place in breaking, popping and hip hop dance.
LIQUID, a popping dance master from Guangzhou who won the Championship in the "POPPING 1 ON 1" battle, said, "Participating in this competition is a good opportunity for young people to have a deeper understanding of Lingnan's culture. I am very interested in Liwan's intangible cultural heritage, especially the lion dance."
He explained that lion dance inspired the dance he performed in the competition. To fully display the power and enthusiasm of lion dance in his own dance, he came to Yongqing Fang, spent a few months to learn the move of lion dance and added these moves in his popping performance, "Inspired by the charm of intangible cultural heritage, I will continue to create more popping dances with the element of intangible cultural heritage and make it become a new dancing style of GBA."
