On January 16, Liwan District in Guangzhou opened five new pocket parks. Four of them are situated in Guanggang New Town, integrating industrial heritage and sustainable landscaping. The parks, namely Chongwen 3rd Road Pocket Park, Liqin North Road Pocket Park, Chongwen 5th Road Pocket Park, Liqin South Road Pocket Park, and Xiwan Road Pocket Park, contribute to improving the living environment by integrating green spaces seamlessly into the community.
In particular, the pocket parks in Guanggang New Town respect and incorporate the history of the Guangzhou Iron and Steel Plant, preserving industrial relics and featuring railway track gardens. The parks also incorporate sponge facilities for sustainable ecological development while preserving existing tree resources.
Chongwen 3rd Road Pocket Park - Urban Vitality Green Core
Themed as the "Urban Vitality Green Core", this park serves as a pilot site for integrating the city garden with the South China Botanical Garden. It includes ecological grasslands, informative plant signage for children, and science-themed facilities such as a climbing frame simulating the NaCl molecular structure.
Liqin North Road Pocket Park - Dynamic Play Park
Themed as the "Dynamic Play Park," this park retains large trees, offering a small yet beautiful, and shady playground. It features a sponge green area, a circular walking trail, and a railway track garden based on the former Guangzhou Iron and Steel Plant's railroad position.
Chongwen 5th Road Pocket Park - Past Glory
Themed as "Past Glory", this park emphasizes the historical imprint of the Guangzhou Iron and Steel Plant, showcasing preserved industrial relics like gantry cranes. The site combines a large ecological sponge sunken green space with recreational facilities and fitness equipment.
Liqin South Road Pocket Park - Urban Scenic Platform
Themed as the "Urban Scenic Platform", this park utilizes its elongated shape to create a linear-tiered park. With a focus on providing panoramic views, it includes a preserved gantry crane and a section of railway track, displaying a distinctive post-industrial landscape.
Xiwan Road Pocket Park - Seeds of Hope
Themed as "Seeds of Hope," this park fosters a connection to nature for children through a "one-loop, five-nodes" landscape structure. It offers fitness spaces for residents while creating an educational and enjoyable space for children with themed plant installations.
These pocket parks reflect Liwan's commitment to green urban development, blending history, nature, and recreation for the well-being of residents. Residents express excitement about the transformation, enjoying the convenience and accessibility of these new green spaces in the heart of Guanggang New Town.
